So… after the afternoon’s drive up to Kaua’i’s scenic canyons and valleys (last journal), the evening is dedicated to a Hawai’ian luau at “Smith’s Tropical Paradise”.
It had a great lagoon, palm trees, the mountains of Kaua’i in the background….
… the ever-present Kaua’i Bird of Paradise feral chickens …
… and (literally) dozens of peacocks …

They like to show off for the ladies… the peahens, though, don’t seem all that impressed.
Typical.
Dinner was prepared in the traditional way, in an “imu” where the fire was started, volcanic rock laid on top of that (which retained the fire’s heat for *HOURS*, then the pig, rice pudding, veggies, and other stuff were laid on top of that, covered by banana leaves, then buried in sand!
Here’s an *empty* imu from earlier — that’s the first round already being prepared for dinner…
Here are our hosts digging up “round two”!
And oh… the food is goooooooooooooooooood….
And yes… I tried the “poi” (the little cup of grey goo at the upper right of my plate above). No taste… what the heck is the purpose?
Anyhoo… great food (and Mai Tais!!!)… a fun show during dinner… and it’s off to the evening show!

Nice shots of the lagoon on the way over to the “theater”…
Lots of great dancing (all of the islands that have made up Hawai’ian culture over the centuries were represented) and music… too dark for pictures! But fun.

I got a couple of my kiddos on the way out:
Another great day in Paradise…
