Mediterranean Cruise 2005

October 19, 2005 – Day 7

Sanary Sur Mer!

Today’s pictures here.

Sanary Sur Mer

Sanary Sur Mer across the harborToday was the only day that our weather wasn’t absolutely perfect! In fact, at our planned itinerary destination (St. Tropez), the weather was so rough and the waters so choppy that it was deemed “uncomfortable”.

So, with St. Tropez waved off (pun only slightly intended), we moor off the small town of Sanary Sur Mer, France.  It turns out to be a great day for everyone, as Kathy, Paul, and Geri decide to stay aboard Voyager as a recovery day and I pack up my camera, passport, and money and head off to explore!

As the tender drops me off in the inner harbor, I’m struck again by the colorful boats and the harbor-side cafes.  I’ll enjoy a nice quiet lunch here later, but for now – it’s exploration time!

St. Nazaire and palm.jpgWith Voyager in the distance, I trust to my (excellent) sense of direction and just start walking into the interior of the town.

It’s a good thing about that (self-described) excellent sense of direction, too – as the further I wander, the narrower the streets become – with apartments/homes rising above and blocking out some useful landmarks.  I am able to navigate back to a street where the steeple of St. Naizaire rises in the distance … excellent!

The Eglise St. Naizaire (Church of St. Nazarus) is very lovely, with beautiful painted ceilings and walls.  I love intricate stained glass in old churches, and this one doesn’t disappoint!

I found myself quite alone at one point, so I put a few Euros in the collection, lit a candle, and had a quiet moment to myself.  It was a great way to wrap up my visit here.

Remember that harbor-side cafe I mentioned earlier?  By this point, I was famished and the lovely sandwich I had here, watching people walk past and the boats gently rocking in the water … perfect and peaceful.

Boarding the tender back to Voyager, I find out that Kathy, Paul, and Geri had enjoyed their day thoroughly aboard the ship – having a nice afternoon tea with a great view and just generally relaxing in style.  Another relatively short daily journal – but the memories are large.  I enjoyed my solo day of exploration, but tomorrow’s going to be another big one!
